Coldest Days of January

Yesterday, January 31st,  we read Days of the Blackbird by Tomie dePaola.  According to the story the last three days of January are supposed to be the very coldest.  It certainly has been cold here, especially today!  The story goes that birds sit at the top of chimneys to keep warm during these most frigid days.
Days of the Blackbird
We made this simple bird feeder craft to go along with our story.
I used fresh bread, and let it sit out on the counter for a little over an hour.  I used a cookie cutter to cut out the hearts, and used a chopstick to poke a hole.
The kids spread peanut butter on and then sprinkled on the bird seed.
The kids really enjoyed making this easy craft (and eating the leftover peanut butter on their plate!).  We’re supposed to get a big snow storm this week.  The birds in our neighborhood should be well fed.
Here’s hoping you’re toasty warm even on the coldest days!
