Recovering Faith ~ A Book Review

As a convert myself, I love reading about conversion stories.  This book was no different.  I first found out about this book from reading Barbara Curtis' blog, mommylife - she is one of the featured stories.  I jumped at the chance to review it when I spotted it on Catholic Company book list.  It didn't disappoint.

The book contains stories from 18 different people, most of whom were born Catholic and came back to the faith.  From well known people like Martin Sheen and Clarence Thomas, to more unfamiliar names, but equally compelling stories as Sally Mews and Amy Betros.

Conversion stories are intensely personal and no two stories are alike.  A good reminder that God meets us where we are and through different circumstances.

I have read Clarence Thomas's memoir, which is an excellent read by the way, but I still found his story compelling.  He had grown up with a grandfather who was Catholic and had attended a black parish as well as a parish elementary school.  He attended a minor seminary in 1964, being one of only two blacks in the entire school.    That certainly wasn't an easy time to be a black man in our country.  Even with the pastoral letter that was issued in 1958 called "Discrimination and Christian Conscience", he was still treated rather poorly at the school, at least by the other students.  Through many twists and turns of his life he again fully embraced the church as an adult.

Throughout the book the author gives bits of explanation or little apologetics lessons, on the Catholic faith.  For instance, some of the sidebars included contain information on the Church Fathers, What is Grace?, or what is The Catechism of the Catholic Church?

The stories are highly interesting and easy to read, yet meaty enough to impart knowledge.  I think conversion stories are great books to pass along to someone who may be interested in learning more about the Catholic faith.   It's a gentle introduction and not at all intimidating.

I will definitely add this one to my "should be passed along" list.

This review was written as part of the Catholic book reviewer program from The Catholic Company. Visit The Catholic Company to find more information on Recovering Faith: Stories of Catholics Who Came . They are also a great source for a Catechism of the Catholic Church or a Catholic Bible.

It sounds like an interesting read. I will look in to getting this book- conversion stories are always an inspiration! I went from nominal Catholic to fallen away Catholic to wholeheartedly Catholic, so I love to hear how others came to embrace their faith.

I love hearing conversion stories! They really warm my heart and are truly inspirational. I was raised Catholic and never wavered from my faith, but, last year I began to read scripture daily during Lent and have not missed a day since! It has been such an awakening of my faith and I have been so blessed this past year.
Thanks for the great suggestion Jen.

I LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! conversion stories, Jen!

My brother has personally met Justice Thomas numerous times since John is in upper management at Werner Enterprises (Justice Thomas is married to Mr. Werner's daughter). He has "popped" in John's office more than a half dozen times. I often wonder if my brother realizes just how lucky he is to have met such a great man?!

I love conversion stories too since I am a convert. I will definitely have to check this out. I am going to be an RCIA sponsor again next year for another friend, and if I like this book, I will recommend it to her. There is nothing like reading others' conversion stories to encourage one's own journey into the Church!

Great review Jen! I have not heard of this book, but I LOVE conversion stories as well! I am a "cradle Catholic" while my husband came into the Church 5 years ago. I didn't know you are a convert. This book reminds me of the book series "Surprised by Truth" by Patrick Madrid (I think he's the author) Anyway, SBT are a collection of conversion stories and I think there are 2 SBT books out now. Have you heard of these! God bless and happy early Mother's Day!
