Affordable 3D Printing Pen

February 29, 2016 by Jen 6 Comments

AtmosFlare 3D Printing Pen

I received this product for free, I was compensated for my time, all of my opinions are honest and I was not required to post a positive review.

If you have followed this blog for any length of time, then you know I’m not big on hands on, messy projects. You are much more likely to find us sitting on the couch reading a good book. My 12 year old though, loves art and loves to draw. I knew he would be completely excited to get his hands on a 3d printing pen. I was right!

AtmosFlare 3D Pen is right up his alley. He enjoyed experimenting with what the pen could do and the different drawings he could create. It does take a bit of patience and a little bit of a learning curve, but in just a few minutes he was off and running. Honestly, I think he enjoyed just playing around with the pen and seeing what it could do rather than being focused on a particular finished product.

It’s exactly how he loves to work with other building type toys like Lego. The kits are great, but he would much prefer to make his own thing. This writing tool definitely sparked his imagination.

Benefits for 3D Printing Pen for Child:

Pretty much open and go. We watched the three short videos in the “Getting Started” section and he was off and running. Written instructions are included as well.

Fabulous way to explore a new medium – even if your child isn’t necessarily a big art lover. All kids love to create!

If you had two pens it would be a blast for siblings/friends to work on a project together.

Benefits of 3D Printing Pen for Mom

Did I mention I prefer non-messy art options? I do and it was. Win for me!

The product is affordable and so are the refillable cartridges. At only $5.99 for the refills, you can choose from 12 different colors, I didn’t feel like I had to stand over him and make sure he didn’t “waste”.

Great gift for the hard to buy tween/teen. Let’s face it, the tween/teen years can be tough to buy for. Especially as their gift requests tend to get pricey.

This product was a total win for my family. My 12 year old tried a new artistic medium and I didn’t have a big trail of messes to clean up. My 12 year old has a lot of excellent qualities, cleaning up after himself is not one of them!

3D Printing pen’s really don’t work. I have tried a few but they are one of those things that you will use for 10 minutes and never use again.

I’m sorry that you didn’t have a good experience with yours, you should give this one a try! My son has really enjoyed messing around with it – more the process than the finished product, but he has definitely enjoyed it.

I think for someone who is a professional in 3d printing, most 3d pens are no more than ‘toys’- unless of course you get the latest 3d pen for professionals.

But if you’re looking for a great way to put some extra creativity into art, the 3d printing pen is definitely something that does that, especially for kids. But then,if you pick any 3d pen just because it claims to do this or that, you could end up with a knockoff or one of those badly designed ones that surely never work.

If you have to buy a 3d printing pen, it helps to know a few things that guide your choice… like the age of the user (the Atmosflare is great for kids!), experience level (beginner/ expert/ etc), and type of drawings you want to achieve. I’ve also noted that understanding a bit about the technology itself helps pick a more suitable 3d pen for yourself.

      I hope that helps.

I imagine it would be difficult to create a full scale model with a pen. This is probably best for arts & crafts projects or doodling.
