Homeschool Mother’s Journal :: Greeks & Pickleball {3/16/2012}

The Homeschool Mother's Journal
In our homeschool this week…Our week chugged right along nicely.  We had a sick day on Thursday, but we’re back at it for today.
Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…a couple of weeks ago I asked for some resources to help with the Greek Myths we are talking about.  Both Laurie and Tiffany recommended Greek Myths from Jim Weiss.  I ordered it and we listened to it on Wednesday and all the kids really enjoyed it.  I ordered a few other books that we have liked so far too.  As I have been listening to the myths and reading The Famous Men of Rome, it’s such a no-brainer that the boys would enjoy the wars, the fighting, and so on.
Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…Tomorrow Jonah participates in his pinewood derby race.  He’s been busy getting his car ready and is super excited.
Questions/thoughts I have… my parents just returned from a 10 day trip to Florida where they learned about PickleBall.  Apparently it is the fastest growing sport in America?  If you’re like me you have never heard of it.  It’s kind of a cross between tennis and ping pong.
Things I’m working on…I’d like to get started on another knitting project, but I have no idea what to get started on just yet.  I need to dig through my pile and see what I have going.  I also need to spend some time organizing my knitting paraphernalia.  If you are a knitter/crocheter, how do you organize your needles and stash of yarn?
I’m reading…I just downloaded What’s Eating Your Child to my Kindle Fire.  I’m just about finished with Reading Through the Bible in 90 Days, then I will have more time to pick up the pace with The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.  Lent is almost half over and I haven’t made much progress.
I’m cooking…we are loving a dressing that we picked up a Whole Foods a few weeks ago called Mango Coconut & Pepper.  We have been using it as a dressing (obviously), a dip, on roll-up sandwiches, and the other night I poured a bit on some Tilapia filets and baked it in the oven for fish tacos.
This coming Sunday is Laetare Sunday, which is a bit of a celebration for the mid-way point through Lent.  The rose vestments that are worn are to be a symbol of “hope and joy” in this earnest season.  We are planning to have Peppermint Shakes to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and Lemon Creme Puffs to celebrate St. Joseph’s Feast Day.
I’m grateful for…the storms passed us by with no damage.
I’m praying for…last night we had some tornadoes in our area and a town near us was pretty devastated.

I love your quote! :) I am glad you guys made it through the storms. My parents live in Alabama and this past year has been wild! I have never heard of Pickle Ball either! Sounds fun. I am a beader and currently looking for ways of organizing too. If you come up with anything good please do share :) Stopping by from the MHJ :)

I would love to learn to knit! It’s on my “bucket list!” I have heard of pickleball :) That dressing sounds amazing. I might have to pick it up when I make it to Whole Foods! Have a great weekend. Stopping by from the MHJ.

Phew! Glad the storms passes over! Hopefully the other towns can rebuild quickly! I remember tornadoes from our days in the mid-west…I’ll take PILES of snow over them! Stay safe! Butter tastes SO much better than margarine…and you can even make homemade butter with kids SO easily! Enjoy your weekend!

Sarah has this neat Kindle-sized crochet needle holder from Micheal’s I believe. It had been a gift from a friend.

I heard about the storms up there! Glad you are all okay!

    That salad dressing sounds yummy!!

Sounds like you had a great week. I will have to remember those stories for when we get back to the Ancients. That dressing does sound good!

I have been knitting for a while, but still consider myself a beginner. I just can’t seem to move beyond the basics with much success, yet! Thanks for the comment :)

I wish I could knit or crochet…really I do. My kids loved all the ancient Greece stuff, but they got really irritated with the ‘skin’ showing in the art work. My son asked me “why couldn’t they keep their clothes on, mom?” I am glad you got some good advice about what to watch.

    We love Whole Foods!!

I am praying with you that you and your family are kept safe during the tornado scares. It is heart breaking to see the devastation that can happen in minutes. Have a blessed weekend.
