Praying for our Children

February 11, 2013 by Jen 10 Comments

Praying for our children, a most important part of being a parent.  It’s part of my morning routine, is it part of your routine?

My husband and I usually use our time in Sanibel Island to get on the same page about our prayers for each child.  It isn’t necessary to plan a weekend away, but it sure is nice!  An evening out for dinner, or an evening after the kids are in bed is really all that’s necessary to formulate a plan.

It’s been so helpful for us to make our prayer time a concerted effort.  My husband often has different insight into a situation or child than I do.  We have a prayer app that we use to jot down specific prayers for each child as well as each other.  That way we are each praying for the same things.  Some mornings we don’t have the opportunity to pray together physically due to his work schedule, but we can be united in prayer spiritually.

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them” Matthew 18:20

As parents we are in constant need of God’s grace, promptings from the Holy Spirit, discernment and wisdom.  Graces come from the sacrament of marriage.  God brought my husband and I together to love, nurture, and raise these particular children.  Don’t ever underestimate the power of those graces!

Praying together for our children is another way to strengthen our marriage, and in turn strengthen our family.

Life changes, so we modify prayers throughout the year.  Just as our prayer needs change, so do those of our children.

Lent starts this week, a perfect time to begin the habit of praying for your children!

I have tried to be more diligent in this area, as well. While I normally like doing everything electronically, I tend to keep a handwritten prayer journal. I have a notebook that I jot prayer requests down in and then I write the date next to them when they are answered.

Jen, I love the idea of you both having the same prayers that you are saying for the children (and their individual needs). What a beautiful idea.

I love that you come together to decide on specific prayers for your children. I am sure that doing this together not only strengthens your bond with your children, but strengthens your bond as a couple too.

I use one called Prayer Journal. I’ve had it for a while and for some reason I couldn’t find it to link it up, but there are several available.

Sanibel Island sounds fabulous! How awesome that you and your husband take time to formulate prayer intentions for each child. That’s teamwork!

I just love this post, Jen. I pray a decade of the Rosary for each of my children but I have never thought to ask my husband how HE prays! (Duh!) This will make a great date night conversation that I will look forward to. Thanks for great resources too. I have heard of some but not others. I just recently linked up to a Catholic prayer group who prays for their children and I can’t think of the name at the moment to link here. I’ll have to check and get back if you are interested. God bless and thanks again!
