5 Family Read Aloud Books on Our To Be Read List

5 Days of Great Family Read Alouds

(contains affiliate links)

I always have a running list of books that I want to read aloud with the kids. I take advantage of our library request system – a big time and money saver. I also admit to being slightly addicted to Amazon.

Admittedly we are slow book readers. We generally read only a chapter per day. Sometimes, especially when we are getting to the end of a great book, we will read two. Every once in a while we will read another chapter in the evening after dinner, but that tends to happen more in the winter.

I’d rather have kids paying attention for short periods of time and really absorbing what we are hearing, rather than trying to force it and just get another chapter in. I love this passage from Little Britches (a book I recommended yesterday) about Mother reading to her family,

“When Mother read, we children had to be quiet and pay attention. We could do most anything we pleased with our hands, like making whistles, stringing dried berries for beads, or playing with dolls, but if one of us whispered, Father would snap his fingers. If he ever got to the third snap, Mother would close the book and we would do something else for a while.”

Family Books on Our To Be Read List

Here are the books on our current to be read pile:

Amazon & Swallows: The first in a series of adventuring books about an adventuring family!

Laddie: Gene Stratton Porter wrote one of my most favorite books growing up, Girl of the Limberlost. I don’t know why I never looked to see what else the author had written, but when I discovered she had more books I knew I wanted to share them with my kids.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane: I hear this is a tear-jerker and we will need to keep our tissues close by.

The Penderwicks: I like to read stories about big families to my own big family.

The Mysterious Benedict Society: This has been on our list for a long time, I don’t know why I have been waiting to share it. I guess that’s part of the problem, too many good books and not enough time. I think my kids will really enjoy this one.

What’s on your to be read list?
