WUTW :: {Not} Back to School Edition – 8/4/2011

August 5, 2011 by Jen 10 Comments

Around the House –  My Dad came over this week to make a few small additions to our school room, I will share more on that later.  We did clear out a bunch of things from the house and garage to donate to a garage sale the Knights of Columbus were having at our parish.  Otherwise, just the basics of housekeeping are getting covered.  We have been busy enjoying summer!

In the Kitchen – I hate to say it but, I really haven’t kept up with any kind of meal plan this summer, except that Bob has been grilling out on Saturday nights and we have pizza on Sunday.  Other than that we seem to be flying by the seat of our pants.  For a few weeks in the summer it will be okay, we will get back to our regularly scheduled meals in September.

Education – We started back to school on Monday.  So far we have gotten in two full days and I am happy with both our schedule and our curriculum choices.  We will have a short week this week and next, it has been nice to ease into things.

FIAR –  This week our book was Little Nino’s Pizzeria

Little Nino's Pizzeria
Our go along reads were The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza and A Magical Day with Matisse
Earlier in the week we talked quite a bit about relationships and serving others.  We read Matthew 25: 35-40 and our verse to memorize was Hebrews 13:16
We also discussed nutrition and exercise, the kids colored a page from the new USDA food guidelines, as well as a pizza counting worksheet.
We plan to make pizzas on the grill on Saturday.  I will either update with photos here or add them to the Facebook page.

*Edited to add our pizza photos from the weekend*

the crusts got a little bit burnt!

Paths of Exploration –  We kicked off our new school year with a field trip to see The Nina & Pinta.  Our first unit is on Christopher Columbus.  So far we are all really happy with this curriculum choice, in fact I over heard Jacob say “I love school”.  Coming from him, our hard to please boy, that’s a pretty big statement!  I think we are going to enjoy keeping the notebooks and seeing the progress the kids make over the year.

Sounds like a great week! We will be starting back to school in 2 weeks (all of the away-from-home schooled kiddos) and then Seth and I will start the following week with homeschool. So I have three weeks to plan and get ready because of course I procrastinated until now.

I have a question. Do you have a suggestion for a good, Catholic, character building/manners book. We are in need of one this year.

    Thanks!

Kimberlie, I would recommend P.A.C.E. here is a link:

We used it on and off last year during tea time, we will do the same this year.

Great wrap up and love the pizza on the grill idea. I will look forward to seeing how you do that:) We are starting out with nutrition and exercise with our first Social Studies unit too. Thanks of the link to the worksheet! Have a blessed weekend:)

Thank you Jen! I looked it up and it looks good. I am also considering the Great Adventure Bible Timeline for Kids. I participated in the adult study 4 years ago and it was fantastic. I think the kids version looks promising.
