WUTW :: Soccer & 9/11 – 9/9/2011

September 9, 2011 by Jen 11 Comments

Around the House ::  We had a nice Labor Day weekend.  We spent Monday at home finishing up a couple of little projects that have needed our attention.  Soccer!  Soccer began this week.  Three of the kids are playing, so that means we have four nights of practice, plus Saturday mornings for games.  Plus two are still doing Tae Kwon Do and one is doing riding therapy.  For the next couple of months we have multiple events most evenings.
We also had our first round of head colds mid-week.  Hoping that was our first and last for the winter.
In the Kitchen ::  Meal planning makes life easier as our schedule gets crazier for the fall, see above! Needless to say I will be making good use of the crock pot and dutch oven.
Faith ::  We celebrated Mary’s Birthday on Thursday.  I usually keep breakfast pretty simple, but we made a more substantial meal and brought out the blueberries for oatmeal and yogurt.  We also lit our Mary candle.  We have been going through the First Communion Catechism, and just happened to be on a section about Mary, which fit perfectly with our discussion about her birthday.
Learning ::  While we are waiting for Jonah & Sarah’s new Math U See books to arrive, we have been discussing how to tell time.  They have enjoyed working on this project together.
Today we are going to spend some time talking about September 11th.  I wrote a guest post at The Homeschool Classroom, about ways to Remember 9/11 in our Homeschool Day.  I’m going to take some of my own suggestions and read our books, work on the Pledge of Allegiance {Jonah also needs to learn it for cub scouts}, and do some sort of craft.
FIAR ::  This week we read The Duchess Bakes a Cake.  We enjoyed reading the story.  I like reading stories that rhyme.   The first time we read the story, I stopped before the end and had them try to guess how they could get the Duchess down from the giant cake.  Immediately Levi said “eat the cake!”  If you knew Levi you would know it was no surprise he answered that one!
We noticed that this particular edition was printed in South Korea.  That led us to spending some time talking about the title page, and talking about words like author and illustrator.  The kids also spent a good deal of time counting the children in the story.  Over, and over again.
Besides making roast chickens and a cake on Monday, we didn’t do a craft or really any other extras for that matter.
Paths of Exploration ::  This week we managed to finish up all of lesson 4, so next week we will start doing one complete lesson per week.  We were a little off with vacations, holidays etc.  We spent some time learning about the solar system, specifically the inner planets.  We haven’t talked much about the solar system in the past so this was a good introduction and perhaps will spark an interest.  I hope to do some sort of craft regarding the solar system, maybe we will get to it next week.
Have a great weekend!  I’m linking up at Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers.

I am looking forward to getting through the rest of my family camp posts so I can do another wrap up post! This week we will begin Story of the World and our math program. The girls were scheduled to take an all day nature class but Grace sprained her ankle badly last night and now that is up in the air. There is no way you can hike 6 hours on crutches!

Great idea about the meals! I need to figure something out because next week starts 5 days of games and practices for the oldest, 2 for the middle and 2 for the youngest plus 2 scout meetings! Sandwiches get old after a while! LOL

Can’t wait to see what you do for the solar system! Our studies are just starting and I’ve been saving ideas for activities and projects to go along with the reading.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Sounds like a great week! Your schedule sounds pretty hectic for the next couple of months! I’m sure the crockpot will be a big help. I just love mine. 🙂

I love the big clock you are using to teach your kiddos time. Where did you get it?

    God bless,
    Lisa

Lisa, the clock was purchased from Pottery Barn several years ago. I did a quick search and it doesn’t look like they carry it anymore. I did find one on ebay.

Ohhh, we had our first colds too:( Tis the season. Thankfully, it seemed to be a quickie and didn’t keep anyone down for long. Hope you are all feeling better! Have fun with your new soccer season:)
