Homeschooling is a Marathon

Homeschooling is a Marathon

The homeschooling year just started for most of us. Looking at the calendar it can feel like a long time until summer!

As much as it can feel good to get back into a routine,  and it does. The lazy days of summer are still hanging wistfully in the back of my mind.

Last week I was really fighting feelings of discouragement. Is math always going to be a struggle? Are we EVER going to achieve 100% literacy in our homeschool? Are my kids ever going to love, I mean really love reading? Are we EVER going to get through the day with everyone simply remembering to brush their teeth???

I like to see results and let’s face it, motherhood is not efficient check off the boxes type of work. Homeschooling is the same way. The seeds we are planting some times take a long time to come to fruition. A long time.

For the most part so much of what we do is gradual. Small building blocks (pebbles?) that will hopefully add up over time.

Those of us with special needs children know how much slower the process can go for our quirky kids. A turtles pace. The problem is, I don’t WANT things to go at a turtles pace. I want to see results, yesterday.

Which then reminds me that homeschooling is often so much more about me than my children. My attitude, my expectations, my perseverance.

Everyday I need to strap on those darn running shoes and do what God has called me to do. Even when I would rather pull the sheets over my head or float around in the swimming pool eating chocolate. It will be the slow and steady that makes a difference.

Showing up when we feel like throwing it in.

One foot in front of the other.

A marathon not a sprint.

Thank you for the words of encouragement—I have been struggling with discouragement as well lately. And I so appreciate that my kids are not the only ones who don’t always get their teeth brushed!! Arghh!! What is up with that?
Will keep on running the race–thank you for the reminder that it is indeed a long journey and not a sprint !!

Yes, homeschooling is about God changing us as parents into His image as we learn how to work through all our sin issues so we can properly point our children to Christ. Homeschooling is humbling. #laughlearnlinkup
