The Raft :: Crafts, Activities & Food!

I love pulling activities and ideas from a great picture book.  It’s like undercover learning.  Kids usually have no inkling that so much information is being stored in their brains. I’m certain that is why I have loved Five in a Row so much over the years.

I find the book The Raft by Jim LaMarche so charming.  The illustrations are gorgeous and the story is so sweet.  A young boy, reluctantly goes to spend the summer with his “river rat” Grandma, and finds a whole world of adventure waiting for him.  My animal lover adores this book, and so do the rest of my children.

I’ve put together a few ideas to help you really enjoy this book, over several days, with your children!

The Raft Craft Ideas

The illustrations in this story is are gorgeous.  We used the tutorials from A Simple Start in Chalk Pastels {click on the link in the sidebar for more information} to practice drawing bird nests.
Another idea would be to try drawing with the chalk pastels right on a small piece of wood.
Simple pencil sketches are fun and easy for kids to do as well.

The Raft Food Ideas

One of my favorite activities is to pull food ideas from a story.  When we were doing Five in a Row, we had one night each week that we made a “Five in a Row” dinner.  The Raft is a great story with lots of food ideas.  It’s possible to have both a picnic lunch and there are plenty of dinner ideas too.

Dinner Food

Copywork can be taken from just about any book and is a wonderful, gentle way to practice handwriting, spelling, and punctuation.  Remember that covert learning?

“All the while, birds flew over my head, every now and then swooping down to the raft as if it were a friend.  A crane waded through the reeds to it.  A turtle swam up from the bottom of the river.”
