Music Study for the Large Homeschool Family

Music Study

{All opinions are honest. I received the product for free and was compensated for my time.}

As a homeschooling mom in a large family, I juggle a big to do list every day.  Often just getting the basics of my day completed feels like an insurmountable task.  Math, history, writing, reading, not to mention feeding six people, doing laundry, cleaning and all the myriad of other tasks that come up in the day.  I just might burst into tears if someone tells me I have to add one more thing to my plate!  The last thing I need is a fussy complicated curriculum that doesn’t amount to anything more than busy work.  No thanks!

That’s why I was thrilled when I had the opportunity to review Music Appreciation for the Elementary Grades from Zeezok.  Music study is something we are fond of in our home.  Even when we don’t get to it on a regular basis, it’s still an activity my children enjoy.  However, our time is precious and I don’t want to do something just for the sake of doing it.  I want our time spent doing worthy studies that will bear good fruit.

I have a feeling I’m not alone in that thought process!  So, why should you add Music Appreciation for the Elementary Grades to your homeschool routine?

Benefits for a Large Homeschooling Family

* Open and Go Curriculum

* Great for “Family Style” Teaching – Multiple Age Ranges

* Can be Used over the Course of Several Years

No prep work was required of me before hand, everything is ready to go as I open the book. This is a must for me especially when it comes to adding in the extras.

This curriculum is so rich, and easy to incorporate that it will very quickly become a “want to” not a “have to”.  If your children are like mine, they will be asking to do more. Spending just a bit of time each week reading our book selection and doing a few of the activities has paid off tremendously.

Making the investment in this curriculum is worthy – a curriculum that you can use with your children over many years.  It definitely works across a wide span of grades which is something I love and appreciate.  This music program fits so well with my mostly “family style” approach to teaching as well as my relaxed approach.  This flexible curriculum can be used in one year or spread across several years.

Focus on Beethoven

Beethoven became a person we knew, almost like a friend rather than a stuffy old person with boring music.  This study integrated well with our current studies.  We learned he was born Catholic, was viewed as a religious person but rarely went church – that right there gave us lots to discuss!

We learned that a meal he ate often for breakfast was oatmeal.  We made our favorite version of oatmeal and talked about him over breakfast.

Giving Lapbooks a Try with Zeezok

Lapbooks are not normally something we do in our regular homeschool routine.  They just have never been something that my children were drawn too.  For the purposes of this review though, I wanted to give the Lapbook a try.  We opted to pick and choose the items that we wanted to include without feeling like we had to do each portion.  If you have some very hands on learners, then Lapbooks will be a must in your homeschool.  Zeezok makes putting together a Lapbook very easy and straightforward. All I needed to supply was the glue and file folder, even my non-crafty self had that!

Here is Sarah sharing her Lapbook creation:

What’s Included in the Zeezok Music Appreciation Curriculum

* Music Appreciation Guide Book – Your “open and go” curriculum plan. Weekly lesson plans, activity pages, tidbits of interest, recipes – all sorts of great stuff

* Living Books {7} – A short history book of each composer.  High interest books your kids will love.

* Music Appreciation Music Discs

* Lapbook disc

I would encourage you to consider adding this music curriculum to your homeschool line-up.  You will be glad you did and your children will thank you when they have a deeper and more meaningful appreciation for some of our world’s greatest musical composers.

    This curriculum looks fantastic! My kids would love the living books that go along with each composer as well. Thanks for a wonderful suggestion to incorporate a subject I often neglect.

    I need help with teaching music appreciation because I don’t know where to start and this looks like a great resource to teach and learn!

    I would LOVE to win this! My kids are loving classical music right now but I don’t know where to start! Thanks for sharing this with us.

    Would love to try this curriculum with my 5th grader. He loves music, mostly country music, but enjoys learning about music in general.

    Looks interesting! We’ve been doing a music study every day but I’ve been making it up. This would probably be easier.

    We would love to be able to add something like this to our day. I agree tough to add extra’s in a big family!

    I am so music dumb. If my kids are going to get any music appreciation beyond listening to NPR in the car, I need a curriculum. Right now they’re familiar with Tchaikovsky only because my daughter is obsessed with ballet and watches them on YouTube.

    This looks like a wonderful introduction to music for our younger children. Three of our older children really focused on their music and play for others (two in our state’s Capital youth symphony orchestra) so there’s a real gap for our younger children. This “open and go” format just might work for them – especially if they get the “want to” element!

    Thank you for posting.

    We currently do not study music, but it is something I would like to do. I really need something that is multiple age friendly and requires very little prep. I will be looking into this further. Thanks.

    wow. I was just searching on large Catholic homeschool to find some new ideas to help with my large Catholic homeschool. I’ve heard great things about Zeezok but music has been put on the back burner all too often here. This looks great! and I love that it works for multiple ages!
