10 Unexpected Benefits to Homeschooling

1.  No Packing Lunches - No competing with junky school lunches either.  I used to eat a giant cookie, french fries, and a blue slushy for lunch.  Oh yes.  I did.

2.  Field Trips to Interesting Places - We can take day trips to places we are interested in and we don't have to worry about missing or forgotten permission slips.

3.  No Parent/Teacher Conferences - No uncomfortable meetings - our parent/teacher conferences are kinda fun ;)

4.  No Homework! - Our evenings are not spent doing homework.  Enough said.

5.  Flexibility - Our schedule is our schedule, I love that!  It also means I need to be diligent with my days, and make sure we actually get some stuff done.

6.  Vacation in off Season - We can take a vacation when everyone else is in school.  This past Christmas season we went to Lego Land and Sea World in Florida.  What the heck were we thinking?  Never do that again.  Next time we visit, it will be when a majority of people are otherwise occupied.

7.  Go Out for Lunch - Every once in a while, just to shake things up, we go out to lunch during the day.  Just because we can.

8.  My Kids Are With Me 24/7 - Honestly, this can be good {most days} and other days it can be a little trying.  Even on "those" days, I try not to take them for granted and cherish the moments.

9.  We Can Be Friend Picky - We can be more choosy about our children's friends.  It's not to be controlling, but particularly when our kids are young, they lack the wisdom to make good choices.  We can help steer them in the right direction.

10.  Homeschooling Challenges Me - Homeschooling, for the long haul, is in some ways more difficult than I imagined.  Homeschooling, like my children, constantly challenges me to re-evaluate why and how I'm doing things.

What has been your most unexpected benefit?

We went to Disney at the end of January. FANTASTIC!! Then we all got sick when we came home- that was OK though because cuddling and reading counts for school too, and we were able to work a little harder after our sickness passed, AND we reached our state's requirements way before June anyway. And another benefit of HS...those days when you just want to cuddle- they grow up so fast it is nice to be able to appreciate those days too:)

Great list. But, we do homework...or, the kids do homework. It's basically reading, spelling, math problems,....things that they CAN do on their own and that I'll look over the next day. It really helps to cut my work load down. They are pretty good about it. They have to finish before they can go outside. So evening are pretty much free still :)

The vacationing in the off season can be great - if you travel somewhere else a lot of times rates for hotels or condos etc are MUCH cheaper and no huge crowds!

Here is my list.....
From a home school dad.

1) A Catholic school tuition bill for four children without tuition assistance runs about 35,000 year. My home school costs for my four kids runs about 2k a year.

2) My children get a better education than in public or private schools.

3) My children are Sacramentaly orientated, not school orientated.

4) My children have better friends.

5) My children don't bring home as many illness.

6) My children don't bring home as many foul words.

7) The father is more important or honored to the children in home school families.

8) The mother retains here rightful place in the family.

9) The marriage of home schooled parents is better because their parental responsibilities have not been diminished or devalued by a school system.

10) In the first 300 years of the Church, Catholics were persecuted, all the children were home schooled, yet the faith of Catholics flourished.

11) I want my children to not loose their faith and I want them to go to Heaven. Homeschooling is the best option to reach the goal of Salvation.

Instead of taking snow days off (except the first...just because of excitement), we take off nice, warm Spring days.

One of the benefits to our family has been a close relationship with our teens. We have the opportunity to spend a lot of time together without competing with Youth Group, sports, friends, etc., there is enough time for all of that since school time is at home. I have been blessed to have good communication and a heck of a lot of fun with my older kids, and they are blessed to spend so much less time with peer pressure.
