Madeline

Another book that we love...Madeline. We will have a lot of fun reading this book next week!

We got a bit sidetracked this week with Leah's potty training, so we didn't spend as much time as I would have liked on Night of the Moonjellies. We did read it many times and had lots of fun thinking about restaurants and the boys planned and made their own menus. Lots of fun to read.

We tried the new Cheez-it crackers with letters on them..............

Anna's Present

Anna's birthday is October 31st. We sent a present out for her today. We made this sign and then I printed off the picture, laminated it, and sent it along with her present. The kids decorated the sign and we stuck that in with the present also. We also sent her the following: book, nightgown (matching with Sarah), Hello Kitty underwear, Dora activity book, pad of paper, stickers and a lip gloss. We also included a small jet airplane for Levi. We wrapped some of the items in Dora wrapping paper. We wondered if she had even gotten a wrapped present before? It should take 5-10 business days to get there. We hope she likes her present!

Night of the Moonjellies

This should be a fun book for the kids next week. A true story of a boy who spends summers with his Grandma, working at a restaurant! Jacob will enjoy it for sure.

Monday-Social Studies
Tuesday-Science (Moonjellies & Ocean)
Wednesday-Art
Thursday-LA and Math
Friday-Real Life-Running a Restaurant!

Jacob has taken a real interest lately, mostly since we came home from SVG in Aug, in wanting to cook and run a restaurant. He likes to set the table and take food orders. This morning Bob was home to take Leah to preschool, so we had time to make waffles for Waffle Wednesday. Jacob did everything himself. We even doubled the recipe so he had practice with math - but don't him he did math! He did a great job.

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel

This book has been a favorite in our house for a long time. We used to check it out from the library all the time and then when we started FIAR I finally bought the book. It definitely is a classic. Today after we read the book we watched some old steam shovels in action on You Tube and then we watched a cruise ship go through the Panama Canal. We also watched a boat go through the Erie Canal (listening to the song too, of course!) and watched a little of the Soo Locks. The kids were also interested in creating their own books today. Jacob wrote a story about baseball, Jonah a book about animals, and Sarah was about Mike Mulligan.

Mackinac Island

Science-The Frozen Sea

Jonah's version of an igloo the Inuit may have built many years ago.

(Jacob's narration of the book) The Very Last First Time was a great book. It is a true story and it talks about a girl going on the bottom of the sea for the first time. So when they wanted mussels to eat they would go to the bottom of the ocean to collect the mussels. It is about the girl going to get the mussels by herself. She had some candles that she put by some sea rocks, it helps light up the bottom of the sea. She saw lots of shadows. They needed the tide to go out in order for them to walk on the bottom of the ocean.

The experiment we did was to freeze some water in a tupperware bowl. We let it freeze for a little while and then broke a hole in the ice and dumped the remaining water out. It represents the tide going out and the space between the frozen top and the ocean floor. On the last picture you can see the lego man representing Eva.

Apple Pie

Today we wrapped up our reading of How to Make an Apple Pie.....It was a fun book to read and gave us lots of good dinner time conversations. Yesterday Sarah and I put together the Fold n Learn. She enjoyed the cutting and glueing. This morning we made the apple pie recipe from the book. The top was our version of the lattice. Hopefully it tastes better than it looks!
